Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock recently, you will have noticed a lot of people predicting 2016 to finally be the breakout year for VR and 360 video. With this in mind, Seedcamp is pleased to tell you about its investment into Splash, who this week announced their $2.5m fundraise. We’re thrilled to support an ambitious Berlin-based team who are now backed by a strong international line-up of investors that includes Greycroft Partners, Advancit, Felix Capital, BDMI, DeNA, Kevin Wall, and e.ventures.
As a fund, we believe there will be big opportunities to come in both VR and AR. But this is an immersive revolution that is still only accessible to a minority of people right now. By allowing anyone to instantly capture 360° video using the mobile phone in their pockets, Splash democratises the VR experience, allowing users to share moments with their friends across Facebook, YouTube and the wider web.
“Every time a new format for richer viewing has been introduced, there has been a seismic shift in both the way people consume content, but more importantly how they share their lives,” comments Carlos Espinal, partner at Seedcamp. “We are very excited about our investment in Splash because of the importance that virtual reality and 360° video will have in showcasing user generated content in the future. By being able to literally witness an immersive version of people’s moments and experiences, we believe Splash will become the leading platform for virtual sharing.”
If you’re a company working on VR, AR or the future of 360° video we’d love to hear from you. Applications for pre-seed investment are open here now. For seed investment please get an intro into the Seedcamp Investment team.
