Monese image1

We’re exited to announce that Monese – the fintech startup that allows you to open up a UK bank account in less than 3 mins on your mobile – has joined the Seedcamp family.

Seedcamp participated in the $1.8m seed round alongside early Spotify investor Shakil Khan and a select group of other angel investors.

As well as receiving our investment, Monese will receive full access to Seedcamp Week LondonAcademy, Mentors, Network, and our US Trip.

Seedcamp Partner, Reshma Sohoni says, “Opening a UK bank account is a common problem that many expats and immigrants face. Our own international founders, employees, mentors, and investors have faced this issue. So when we met Norris and the team, we immediately understood the scale of the problem Monese is solving. The global movement of labour is only going to get bigger so there’s plenty of opportunity for Monese to grow. We’re excited to join them at this early stage of their journey.”

The company, who are licensed by the UK Financial Conduct Authority, are targeted at helping immigrants and expats, and will offer easy account opening, cheap global payments and a contactless debit card. We imagine the ability to open an account in 3 minutes will be compelling to a greater audience than just that group.

Monese will be launching in the UK during summer 2015. Head over to their website to register for your invite.

We’re thrilled to announce that 8 incredible startups have joined the Seedcamp Family following Seedcamp Week Berlin! The teams have already joined us in London for Onboarding Week, where the Seedcamp team and mentors have been speaking with them about everything from sales to cap tables.

It’s a real pleasure to see new faces joining us from so many countries across Europe; represented are Germany, Israel, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Welcome, all!

Their arrival brings the total number of Seedcamp startups to over 160; that’s more than 160 other connections within the Seedcamp community for our startups to leverage and learn from. It’s great to see such a large family learning and growing together.

Introducing the teams

As usual, the standard of applications was of a very high quality and it wasn’t an easy task picking just a handful of the hundreds of applicants to Seedcamp Week Berlin. But we’re pleased to announce the following teams have joined us for the week.

On Monday the teams went through Seedprep, where the founders presented their startup to the Seedcamp team and the rest of the founders for feedback. It’s an important day as on Tuesday they were pitching in front of a room full of Europe’s top Tier-1 investors.

Today they’ll meet with over 100 experienced Seedcamp mentors and receive valuable feedback on their startups; from team structure, to product, to business model, to branding and beyond. (Have a read of our day-by-day report of February’s Seedcamp Week London for a fuller account of what they’ll be up to.)

Seedcamp Week Berlin wouldn’t be what it is without the help of our amazing sponsors and partners, so we’d like to extend a special thank-you to Google For Entrepreneurs, Amazon Web Services, PayPal Developer, PWC, SendGrid, Capital Accelerator Programme, and the European Regional Development Fund, as well as hub:raum who have been hosting us throughout the week.

We’ll be announcing the teams selected to receive our investment and an invitation into the Seedcamp family soon, but until then…

In the ‘Seedcamp Podcast Series’ we talk with key people in the tech startup industry to hear their stories and gleam key advice and learnings from their experiences.

We had the chance to sit down with Will Bunker during this year’s Collision Conference in Las Vegas. Apologies for the noisy background, but conference areas are not particularly great!

An accomplished entrepreneur and investor, Will Bunker co-founded One-and-Only.com in late 1995. He and his partners grew the company into the largest online dating site and eventually sold the firm to TicketMaster-City Search for $45 million in June of 1999. Soon after, the company was rebranded as Match.com.

Mr. Bunker has a passion for working with early stage entrepreneurs, helping their firms grow and working towards an exit with the highest possible valuation. A long time resident of the Silicon Valley, where he lives with his wife and two teenage children, Will serves on the screening committee of the Band of Angels, the oldest funding organisation in the Valley. He also serves as a member of the Silicon Valley Founders Institute.

The Founders Institute is a global launch network that helps entrepreneurs create meaningful and enduring technology companies.

We’re happy to announce that Seedcamp Partner Reshma Sohoni will be sitting on the judging panel of Twitter’s #PoweredByTweets design competition.

Startups and Innovation

One of the perks of being a world-class Acceleration Fund is that every day we get to work with incredible startups who are constantly innovating to create better, faster and simpler products for millions of people around the world.

And thanks to technology, they’re innovating faster than ever.

Services like Twitter allow startups to spread their message and engage with a global community quickly and easily – great for building a network of passionate fans!

But more than just facilitating communication between individuals, Twitter can be used in all sorts of innovative ways too…

For example, Lateral has created Twitter bots that use their own smart in-house API to suggest solutions to the world’s problems. And HOKO is making tweets smart by triggering specific actions within apps, using their mobile deep-linking technology (eg. allowing users to add a product to their shopping cart directly from Twitter).

PoweredByTweets

#PoweredByTweets

#PoweredByTweets is a challenge that celebrates and encourages Twitter-powered design and invention. The best ideas around the UK will be showcased in an exhibition held during the London Design Festival in September 2015.

The competition presents a great opportunity for innovative startups to express their creativity by solving a problem or creating something visually appealing, with their work being shown at the UK’s most prestigious design festival.

We can’t wait to see what the UK’s tech and design community comes up with, and hope to see lots of submissions from startups around the country!
